Helping Others: It’s As Easy As 1, 2, 3

Mark Twain once wrote, “The best way to cheer yourself up is to try to cheer somebody else up.” I think there’s a lot of truth to that statement, for we tend to get what we receive, so by giving cheerfulness, we get it back.

We might think that helping someone or cheering someone up involves an elaborate, detailed plan. But, it really doesn’t have to. In fact, it can be done quite simply.

How?

Here are 5 simple ideas for helping others and making them feel special:

1. Smile.
As simple as this may sound, sometimes just smiling at someone and recognizing their presence can cheer someone up. We all like to be acknowledged and greeted warmly!

2. Listen.
Truly listening to people, whether they are venting or sharing a story, is a valuable skill and, in turn, makes others feel important. We all want to be heard!

3. Ask questions.
Similarly, taking an interest in someone by asking them questions – about their life, their stories, their experiences, etc. – can also make someone feel special. It’s amazing what you’ll learn from asking just a few simple questions! And you can ask if there’s anything you can do for them.

4. Share a skill or knowledge.
Each of us have different talents and skills. We can help others by sharing information, knowledge or skills that they might not have. You can find out what you might be able to teach someone by asking questions (see #3 above) and listening to what they say (#4 above)!

5. Give a gift.
It doesn’t have to be anything big and it doesn’t have to be for a particular occasion. In fact, sometimes an unexpected gift is the best gift of all! You can use it to say, “I’m thinking of you” or “I value you” or to let them know that you’re grateful they’re in your life.

This list is by no means exhaustive, but is a basic foundation for helping others…and, in turn, helping yourself!
